  • How can breathing exercises reduce asthma symptoms?

Clinical trials report that the improvement to asthma control from applying the Buteyko Breathing Method leads to half the need for inhaled steroid medication and 85% decrease in reliever medication. This has been shown time and again.

Facts about asthma and breathing

People with asthma habitually overbreathe.

This is shown by noticeable breathing at rest, upper chest breathing and mouth breathing.

Overbreathing causes an imbalance in blood gases.

This is in addition to dry airways causing coughing, wheezing and breathlessness.

Narrowing of the airways results in a feeling of air hunger.

This causes people with asthma increase their respiratory rate and volume to compensate, in turn increasing bronchoconstriction (airway narrowing) and creating a vicious cycle of overbreathing.

People with asthma tend to breathe through their mouth.

The nose holds several important functions for breathing including warming, filtering and moistening incoming air.

Nitric oxide is released in the nasal airways.

It’s also antiviral, antimicrobial and increases bronchodilation in the lungs. To get these benefits, you must breathe through your nose.

How can breathe better help me?

About me

I am a qualified Buteyko Breathing Method instructor (BBMcert) with a degree in psychology (BSc hons). After learning about the effectiveness of the Buteyko breathing methods I was lucky enough to train with Patrick McKeown, founder of The Oxygen Advantage and The Buteyko Clinic International. I want to share this powerful toolkit with others and believe that this is something that everyone can benefit from learning, whether they suffer from asthma or health issues that don’t at first appear to stem from breathing dysfunction.

Since studying psychology, I’ve been passionate about mental health and how it cannot be isolated from physical health. The mind affects the body, the body affects the mind, and underpinning everything is the breath.

It’s incredible how we can use simple breathwork to affect our mental and physical state leading to better sleep, less anxiety, better exercise performance and much more.

Based in Auckland, I’m available for groups or one-to-one in person and online consultations for both adults and children.
